Ryde In Bloom
Earlier in April Ryde Town Council’s Allotments Officer, Shona Parnell, and Ryde South Councillor, Karen Lucioni, held a schools Ryde in Bloom launch event at Aspire Ryde where schools of Ryde who have entered Ryde in Bloom this year got a head start by learning how to sow seeds by one of our allotment tenants, George Rollason, and listening to an interesting talk on bees by Elizabeth Van Wyk, a bee keeper and allotment tenant in Ryde. This event was kindly supported by Tesco this year and was organised with help from Jan Gibson, the Community Champion, by providing seeds, soil and other equipment for the morning.
Representatives from Haylands Primary School, Dover Park Primary School and Fiveways attended the launch.
What’s it all about?
‘Ryde in Bloom’ is an opportunity for gardeners, and those that are concerned about the environment, to brighten up their gardens and community spaces and possibly win prizes! It’s not just about flowers – we look for environmentally-friendly, attractive and sustainable planting. This year’s theme for the schools Ryde in Bloom competition is ‘Healthy Eating & Healthy Living’ and to create an allotment style garden.
Ryde in Bloom 2019 entry forms featuring new categories will be available from the Ryde Town Council office early next week, in the June Beacon or you can download these from the website/Facebook page. If you are yet to enter, entry is free so why not dig out those gardening tools and add to the growing success of Ryde. Closing date for entries will be Friday 28th June 2019.
